So got this as my Christmas present to myself
Ordered these from E-bay as Sony Africa says they wont bring them in (kinda dumb, but so be it).
Always been a big SONY fan, so these intrigued me. The 70mm driver is also kinda interesting :faint:
Arrived yesterday, so have not had much time with them, but initial impressions suggest they need a slight break in period to loosen that massively monstrous driver. Sound is good, leaning towards the warm spectrum, but not boomy at all (they vented to prevent this). Build quality is absolutely impeccable. The sliding mechanism and swivel are buttery smooth, the earpads very comfy and the leather very soft. They have a massive sound, but manage to present enough detail to stay accurate and keep up with my other headphones.
A weird aspect of that massive driver is that when some proper bass kicks in, it shakes the headphones (impeccable build quality prevents any noise or rattle, and they vented and well damped), but its weird to put your hand on the outer casing and feel it move. My only kinda gripe is that they collaborated with Kimber to create an awesome looking cable, but dont include it in the box (standard cable is excellent silver coated copper, plus they give you a balanced one for use with the portable amp they make). Now I for one would much rather have had just the single ended Kimber included (purely on looks, doubt I could ever tell the difference sonically). The Kimber aftermarket is also about 3.5k so I wont be buying that then, nor do I see many other people lining up to get it. At 700$ this isnt a top tier flagship, and represents great value. So many companies could learn so much from SONY on how to make a comfortable and bullet proof headphone.
Sonically thus far, they are competent at their price point, but sound retrained, so I think some break in is needed before I make my mind up on these. But so far I would say they can easily take on the Senn HD700 as a slightly more bassy and closed back headphone.
