I have a pair of Monitor Acoustics MA 1000 (80W, 8 Ohm, 89 db) which is normally mated to a Technics SUVX 500 (2 x 55w). At high volume (12 'o clock), I hear a buzzing from the speaker at certain low frequencies. My thoughts were that the speaker is on the way out. Either the drivers or cabinet is damaged.
I then mated the MA 1000's to the Yamaha A-S1000 Amplifier (2 x 85W) and turned up the volume (11 o' clock - dare not go higher).
The Yamaha on paper is more powerful than the Technics.
Guess what, no buzzing - at high volume with hard bass tracks. The speaker actually sounds terrific with sound-stage and transparency that's not present with the Technics. The Yamaha (love this amp!!) is able to push and control the speakers hard with no discernible distortion, which I find surprising as I would think that a larger amp risks damaging the speaker.
Any thoughts as to why it buzzes on one and not the other. Is this why I often hear that it's better to have an amplifier with a higher power output than the speaker can handle, in which case one has to use their ears not to damage the speaker.
