A friend and I listened to his new speakers last night, and they sounded terrible (the source was FLAC files on my HP Microserver via a Mede8er 500X2). When we changed the source, it was fine, leaving me thinking that it could be the Mede8er, the server or the networking hardware that could be to blame for a 'ticking' sound we heard on every mp3/flac file played.
I'm not considering turning the HP server into a HTPC to compare the quality. For this, I will need:
- More RAM (it currently has the standard 2gigs in - does this need upgrading?)
- A decent graphics card*
- A decent sound card*
- A way to control it sans keyboard/mouse
I've read that some of you use software to control it via iOS/Android - this could be perfect. I'd appreciate recommendations on the hardware, software, suppliers, and the apps to control it. The server is currently running Win7-32, but this can change if needs be.
* First price would be if the sound- and graphics cards could somehow be joined, so that there will be one HDMI cable to the AVR.
Thanks in advance!
