Valve / hybrid amps

Am I right in saying there are 3 technologies - solid state, valve and hybrid (combo of the two)?

If I'm right, how close to a valve sound is a hybrid?
Do they manufacturer these to increase the watts and more compatible with speakers? Or is it a cost thing?
