Hi all
I love music and good sound, however have never really prioritised it, you know marital bliss and all that (new dishwashers, paint the house, deflea the dog). In our lounge we've got an Onkyo CD player hooked up to a Yamaha amp and 2 Canton speakers (which I found in a builder's skip in Germany, can u believe it, and had them refurbished). Sounds pretty good to my ears, which probably is not saying much as I haven't really compared to good systems. Need to spend some time in audio rooms getting a handle on what constitutes quality audio, however I'm happy with what we've got there for the mo.
In the TV/family room is where I need some guidance. We have a NAD 513 DVD player feeding an old Sansui AU3900 amp hooked up to 2 pre-rindepest ITT floorstanding speakers. I've been looking at surround options, and would be intersted in your esteemed advice. I followed with interest a discussion a while back about surround vs stereo, where general consensus was that going stereo gets way better quality sound for your bucks, but in my case we would be primarily watching dvds in this room so I expect surround would be the way to go?

I've read a little about 5.1 vs 7.1 and HD/blue ray compatibility and the newer sound formats. Is it advisable to gear up now for the HD era that seems to be upon us, or is this all media hype to fool innocents like me and a second hand non-HD receiver is perfectly ok?

I've always understood that the speakers are where the money should be spent as this is where most cheaper systems lose audio quality. Not sure if that is true, but I'm sure the ITT relics are not up to the job. I was reading some rave reviews about Yambeka Audio speaker sets, any comment?

Cheers Jack
