What do I need to do to use a XBox 360 4gb as media player?

Hi,
I just recently acquired a second hand XBox 360 4GB and want to know from users/owners what the best route will be to use it as a media player for movies and music?
Should I upgrade and add a hard drive or will external hard drives be able to supply all what is needed to fully utilize the capabilities of the XBox?
