I have some vinyl in very good condition, some in terrible condition (ah, the joy of buying it second hand) and some that looks in very good condition, but sounds bad.
So ... if I'm playing a concerto for violin, it sounds fine for the solo bits, but when more instruments kick in it gets a scratchy distortion.
Is that because:
* vinyl is actually stuffed, it just looks ok
* stylus is old/worn
* tracking problem
* something else?
Perhaps strings by themselves 'hide' the distortion more...
It's not a great TT (Dual 505), has an Ortofon cart of inderminite age.
Basically what I'm asking, what are likely symptoms of 'equipment' rather than 'source' problems.
