When did Hi-Fi get good?

Anyone able to say when it was that audio got decent. When I first became aware was late in the 80?s when I heard Money for Nothing on my father-in-law?s Technics Cd, Quad Pre and Power and B&W DM6?s but listening now to my old Rotel TT from 1984 it?s also amazing. So when did we go from than funny tunnel nasal sound to wow? How old of any component can give you decent audio? Is a TT from the 60?s going to be good? Amps from the 50?s? Those old speakers with the riempie grills?
