When shopping for larger/expensive goods, do you pay advertised price?

Just wondering whether you generally pay the ticket price when buying expensive new goods e.g Hi-Fi, mattresses, white goods etc. or whether you generally attempt to negotiate a better deal?

If you negotiate, does it work?  What do you consider a successful negotiation?
