Why are speaker stands flat?

So I'm starting the search for a set of stands for my Boston A26's.

Almost all the stands I've come across (at a sensible price point) have a plate that is smaller than the dimensions of my speakers (They measure 210 wide x 265 deep). Which then, in my mind, raises issues of stability. Even stands with a top plate the same or marginally larger still raise stability issues in my head.

I've seen numerous stand mounts for sale both on & off forum that have clearly fallen at some stage. Assumption being that they've fallen off the stands of course.

Why are stands not manufactured with a raised lip along the edges of the top plate? I've seen some stands that place the speaker at an angle leaning back that have such a lip, but it is along the back edge & is used to stop the speaker sliding off.

Is there a reason why no stands have such a lip? The speaker could still have a gap of say 5mm all around the edges, so it wouldn't be attached to or touching the lip. Lip could be 20mm high?

In my head such a lip along the edge would prevent a lot of the accidental and/or casual knocks, they obviously wouldn't help in the event of a complete all fall over scenario in which the stand & speaker go whoopsy!

I've tried stands once before, but with a gormless (but cute as a button & very loving, which is his saving grace) cat it was a scary proposition. Using the stands as a scratching post nearly saw them go crash with the speakers, and they certainly would have had I not been there at the time.

I'm thinking of resorting to making my own, with a large base plate for ground stability & then a top plate with lip.

Thoughts? Advice please?
