Wooden window frames

It's time to give my wooden window frames and garage doors some TLC. After sanding them down, what would be the best product to apply to protect them from the elements? I would ideally like something which doesn't result in the windows gluing themselves together for the next few months.

Next house will definitely have aluminium frames...
