XLR Sub inputs?

My AR sub-1000 has two rca inputs (L & R), is this what they call XLR inputs? My receiver though, only has 1 sub output, do I just use a splitter on the sub cable from the receiver to the sub or would it be better to connect the sub via the main L & R speaker outputs and connect to the high level inputs on the sub and then connect the speakers to the sub?
