    Ubuntu 12.04

I installed 12.04 LTS server yesterday on the Microserver after my SSD went bust with 11.04. I basically follow GearSlaves guide. I only use it for NAS to do SMB sharing - so also definitely not taxing the system by any means.

    Lcd, Led or Plasma

I have a plasma, the reflection/glare on the screen is a big issue, but I can manage as i am able to block out the light by hanging a black cloth behind me (to the detriment of my marriage). We are going to put a curtain in so that will appease the wife. If I did not have a wife friendly...

    LAN Cable installers

Just my 2c. If its for home, I would pay a competent qualified electrician to do what needs to be done to pull the cable runs through. I think a network technician wouldn't really want to come out for just 2 points.

    Plasma Image Retention

IR is a phenomenon on Plasmas which is due to extended charge on the phosphors and them retaining the charge. As far as I know, LCD (including LED) displays do not suffer from this at all. Most newer panels have shifting algorithms and a few other tricks to reduce the IR. Extended IR used to...

LF: Program to test a PC Setup before it's built (Virtually)

A proggie that tells you about bottlenecks I can believe. There was a proggie where you would enter all the kinds of components that were in your system and it would tell you what the minimum power supply requirement is to have a stable system. However, a program to tell you if a collection of...

    Onkyo - PS3 sound problem...

I was going to type something about the Audio Return Channel ... but that is the TV sending audio to the amp, not the other way around. What I have read is that ARC in HDMI 1.4 is implemented by some vendors as 2 channel audio. I was under the impression the audio was passed the other way...

Best Raid option for HP Microserver.

after weighing all the pros and cons - I opted to rather have single drives + external backup of info. Softraid on Ubuntu is easy to setup and use (in a microserver installation) and I tried various configurations before eventually committing to single drives. The way I look at it: * Raid...

    Ramshackle ADSL - Connectivity Issue

I was also with Kingsley when prepaid ADSL was in its infancy. Used up my cap and wanted to get more GBs. I could only do so the next day! So I signed up with WebAfrica and never looked back.

    Networking 2 routers

Very true as well. I just prefer having a separate switches. More so if they need to be re-appropriated for a gaming LAN duty in the garage.

Bizarre Ubuntu server drive mount behaviour

I've had similar experience when my drives character device mapping would map to different drives on reboot and then my shares wouldn't work. I've also edited my fstab to use the UUIDs and haven't had a problem since.

    Networking 2 routers

This is my setup. From what you say I gather you want something similar. * To join different physical segments (lounge and study) on the same logical network (LAN) you need a switch. * To be able to communicate between two logically different networks you need a router. * To be able to connect...

    4Mbps Bandwidth options...

I use a linksys WRT54L router with DD-Wrt Firmware. There are other routers that DD-WRT suports. Then, Gatecrasher at mybroadband.co.za wrote a nice startup script that does all the configuring of local routes. Another link to check out is http://developers.locality.co.za/splitting I use this...

    Logitech hamony remotes

Thanks for the heads up. Placed an order for the 700. The one button on my old remote is going - was considering getting a Harmony 1, but the 700 will do.

    4Mbps Bandwidth options...

If your traffic is a split between local and international you can get a router that allows split traffic and get two accounts. Local bandwidth is much cheaper.

    Great Deal

I've had problems with vouchers, and Groupon has reimbursed me. Its usually not Groupon at fault but the retailer providing the offer. Not saying that groupon isn't to blame as they do incorrectly advertise the deals and even the 'fine print' is ambiguous.

    Great Deal

I saw the groupon ad. Makes me worried that a software company is selling it and on their site there isn't a hint of selling audio products. Really good price tho, quite surprised that only 1 has been sold!?

    Kids & AV Equipment

Keeping my wife away from the equipment is easy - She is technologically challenged, so she finds all the buttons on the remote intimidating. :) Kids... Well, I don't have my own, but I do have 3 nephews who grew up around me. I can't say I was successful, my old sony speakers - when I moved...

How easy is it register a company?

I have a friend that tried his hand at selling games online. He gave up eventually. Its a long hard road until you reach a stage where your business turns over profit and its worth it in terms of the required effort put in. There are successful online businesses such as Take2 and Nivo - but it...

DTS-HD & Dolby True HD on older AV receivers

The PS3 can do LPCM through HDMI, so you should be able to test that with your current setup.

Opinions on moving my subs, and how I plan on doing it?

Speak to a local granite processor, they usually have (or can source) off cut pieces from the suppliers or other installers, which can be quite large at times at reduced prices. Whilst looking for granite for our kitchen we saw lots of 'small' (ie not full slabs) pieces at Jetstone in Montague...
