High end subwoofers and their amps

Just to clear up my confusion - In my mind I was talking about current, and not power output. But, as for current: You need more amps at let's say 50V then you do at 240V to give the same power, and as such an amplifier can draw less current from the wall (at 240V) then what is required by the...

High end subwoofers and their amps

Thanks for the correction - I saw that Classe gives their power consumption at 1/8th of full output power. Maybe B&W does the same on the sub on which my incorrect calculations were done. As for who taught me maths - my father. However, he cannot be held responsible for any brain fades on my side.

High end subwoofers and their amps

Power consumption is measured at rated input voltage, let's say 240v. If we take my sub, which is rated 1000W RMS with 300Wconsumption and assume 50V voltage to speaker we are looking at 240V/50V * 300W = 1440W RMS to speaker (This is without any losses). Remember, the power amp portions does...

What do I need to stream Netflix to a non-smart TV?

I am using the PS3 and the quality in 1080P is way better than what I can get from the DSTV Explora.

    Netflix vs dstv

I see Netflix as something to decide on, on top of DSTV. Netflix will not replace DSTV not is that its intended purpose. I've already watched about 5 of the documentaries on Netflix over the weekend and found them to be great quality. Also love he range of movies available, as well as the shows...

Netflix SA has just gone live

So far my Netflix experience have been far better than the Showmax one. Trying the one month offer on both of them before I finally decide what to keep (or not). Streaming Netflix via the PS3 and love the way it auto adjusts the quality to keep the stream steady. Mostly settles on 720 with...

    Marantz HD-AMP1

Interesting indeed. I have grown to love my HD-DAC1 a lot, but this would have been a very interesting alternative.

Another Power Amp recommendation question - B&W-related

I have not owned the amps you mentioned, but had Nautilus 802?s driven by Proceed HPA3 (250w) and then the 802 Diamonds driven by Classe CA2300 (300w). Both of them had more than enough oomph to drive the speakers at the levels I normally listen at. I believe any good quality amp 150W plus...

Most cost effective high-end speakers for a 7.x.2 AV system in used market?

@naughty ? I agree with almost everything you say, and yes, it?s always a personal choice. Where I do not agree is this pricing thing ? everyone complains about B&W pricing, but I have yet to see how their (major) competitors R/$ rate are better, as an example: Triton One: R90k/$5k = R18 to...

    Emotiva Warranty

For what it is worth the below an email I got from Emotiva after enquiring about this before purchasing the XMC1. "Hello Carel, Thank you for reaching out to us, If service is required, the cost of shipping to us and return shipping is the sole responsibility of the end user. Should you...

Most cost effective high-end speakers for a 7.x.2 AV system in used market?

I love what Sandy did with the Triton ones, but do not think you can compare them with the 802 Diamond?s. You are affectively comparing a $5000 speaker with something 3x its price ($15,000), and probably something double the price is fairer. Also, if you look on the Golden Ear forum it is most...

    DAC with volume control

Maybe not the correct wording (sorry), but as I understood what basically happens is that you lose some of the dynamics, i.e. a 16-bit recording at 75% digital volume may only have the dynamic range of a 14-bit recording. This is how it was explained to me and may be outdated or not even 100%...

    DAC with volume control

Digital volume control is contentious as it throws away data. Analogue properly implemented is better. IF you are only using it as a DAC you do not need any volume control, but I do not think that will be the determining factor as far as sound quality is concerned. Some DAC's also offer both...

Preamp vs HT Processor in stereo

Agree that a dedicated stereo system probably will sound better,  but in my setup will be expensive to implement as I use my processor for: Digital to Analogue conversion Pre-amp Subwoofer management Room correction. What I do when deciding on a processor is to only listen in stereo when...
