Some opine that you do not necessarily get a better sound.  It depends on the quality of the binding posts of the speaker brand...good to experiment a little before making anmy permanent changes such as joining cables....

If the surround processing and amplification still works, you can perhaps get away with only buying the remote.  run ALL video sources direct to the monitor and use the AVR display to do set up...worth a try, because next thing another component goes and the spend is already hi....

I hear you.  the same applied to the clean up of New York City...zero tolerance means you get policed on everything.  From littering and jaywalking up. The result is that this changes peoples mindsets.  Busybody neighbours is another thing though...sometimes this is the people personalities

That is aside form the fact that they are simply not enthusiasts....the expensive gear is expensive because they 'only buy the best'....car, house, furniture, etc.

congrats...685's are awesome value for money...make sure you invest in decent stands though to hear them at there best and play around the the foam bungs until you get the sound you prefer.

This all assumes we are convinced that we hear properly from day one :)  Actually I understand that no one's hearing is exactly the same form both ears....even when you are younger.  Probably why some people do not like use AVR autoset up as the final check, but once done prefer to tweak...

blow out with a compressor is the easiest...just be carefull

Before that had one of the first batch of VA 802 Integrated amps back in 1994; then 4 VA 802 Slave (powers amps) which Schalk rebuilt including new power supplies, rear and front plates and I used as power in my AV system...awesome :)

Had Whisper, Black Widow Pre and 2 Black Widow Mono Powers....had to move them  :'( Will replace them when I'm 'big' again

Personally I will buy local so long as I hear my preferred 'good sound' so I can sit down an listen without fatigue and that my perception of value for money is met.  I have had one of Schalk's original VA 802 Integrated amps and have move on through to a Whisper, BW Pre and 2 BW Mono Powers...

Wow!! I'm new to this Forums thingee, but okay then :o By the way if you see this...hi Schalk  :D The arguments and technical input is all interesting and as much as I know some love to buy on a based on spec sheet and reviews etc, it is really moot because as mentioned somewhere on this...

oh and if you are on the coast such as in Durban, it is good to check for any moisture damage...especially if you are buying 2nd hand.
