Wholeheartedly agree with chrisc, I have had the same experience several times.  All "plug/socket" and "push-on" connectors need to be cleaned and freshly seated regularly.  It is all too easy to forget about them since often it is inconvenient to access them.

Reading your post again I see you mention only 2 wires to the original connection which means it would not be "Vbe mulitplier" since that would require 3 leads.  It is probably then a transistor connected as a diode (transdiode connection) but still part of the bias setting circuit as mentioned...

It is most likely part of the bias setting circuitry, in the original version it is most likely a transistor connected in a "Vbe multiplier" connection where it has a voltage across it which is a set (adjustable) multiple of Vbe to set the bias current level.  As this is temperature dependent...
