    Wiim mini

Nice review Morne, having the Mini, Pro & Pro Plus I am a great Wiim fan! Only problem I had with the Mini was a faulty audio lead, an apparent dry joint on the audio jack. Replaced it with a generic one sorted that problem very quickly. -F_D

    DIY isolation transformer

I agree with Shaun here as well. What I can't keep wondering about is why you would want to do this anyway? Assuming all the vintage amps you want to work on all have their own fully isolated mains transformers, why bother? -F_D

    DIY isolation transformer

I have always had excellent service from Peter Souris & Co, dating back from the '70s. Never had a problem with their transformers. Jazzy, the little one you are referring to is most likely a filter choke for the rectified DC output, if it only has two wires from it. -F_D

    Oscilloscope question

If the price is good then go for it. Specs are fine for Hobbyist purposes. Read the user manual (hard copy or online) first to familiarise yourself with it. -F_D

Can i use an EM81 tube in place for the old Em80 valve?

Not a listed equivalent although they are the same pinouts and have similar ratings. Deon has posted interesting data above, I would probably give it a go myself but just take care if you decide to do so. The two displays are vastly different however so not sure how practical this might be. -F_D

    Replacement Ear Pads

They do indeed, I was quite pleasantly surprised when I got notification from Amazon of a refund, which was paid promptly. I would have no hesitation in buying anything from them, and the items generally arrive a tad sooner than they estimate. -F_D

    Home printer recommmendations

I use various HP MFP (Multi-Function) Laser printers at home and at work, I get good service from them and they work well with generic refill cartridges. -F_D

    Remote Control Repository

It seems as if the remote advertised in the above site is new, but we'll never know that. The price of R80 is great, so not as major train smash if it does not work. I just don't feel like sending them the R80 and then PFFT! - they disappear, never to be heard from again. P'nP apparently dropped...

    Remote Control Repository

I found this site based in Pretoria, they advertise the exact model (AIM ALED-32HD) I need but their customer reviews are not very encouraging. TV-Man Has anybody ever dealt with them before, and can verify their address? TV Men, 332 Nana Sita St, Pretoria Central, Pretoria -F_D

New Restoration Project - Radford K25 valve monoblocks

Can't help here... rust is something which is not particularly problematic here in the good old North West... I would imagine sanding with very fine glass paper followed by a light coating of varnish? -F_D

    Remote Control Repository

I'm looking for a remote control for an AIM 32" TV for my gardener, his two little kids fought over the remote and it ended up going "Poof!". Any AIM TV remote might be useful, if any one can assist. -F_D

New Restoration Project - Radford K25 valve monoblocks

Very nice find indeed! I would guess they were probably even built at the SABC, but could be wrong. Ampdog (RIP) would have been able to jump in and meaningful advice. Looking forward to following your restoration topic. -F_D

    RIP

That's sad, I enjoy his music. Music at least that will live forever, the above is still played daily on one of the IR stations that I listen to. -F_D

How do i test a cap using a multimeter?

As Chris says. To test an electrolytic cap, charge it with a 1.5v torch/penlight battery for a few seconds, leave it disconnected for 5-10 minutes, then measure with a DC voltmeter to see if it held the charge. That is a VERY basic test and says nothing about the actual capacitance or leakage...

    Ekco u312 “popping noise” issue

Doubt it, unless it was a high-wattage low value resistor connected in parallel across the HT windings. Check the resistor's value with an Ohmmeter. The UY85 rectifier should be fine too unless you connected the filament wires to the HT side of the transformer. Cgek the heater pins for...
