    Sony MDR 1000X

Didn't see them but I don't think so. SA duty free doesn't do any high end stuff; the R7k Bose QC35's are about the most expensive ones they sell.

    Sony MDR 1000X

Went through OR Tambo last week and they're on sale at duty free for R4,500. Looks like a steal, the Bose QC35's are 7k

Home theatre design: seats and surround speakers placement

When placing your seating it's also worthwhile considering how far apart your front speakers are. The Dolby guide shows an angle of 22 - 30 degrees for each speaker - if my rusty maths is correct this corresponds to the distance apart of the front speakers being 80 - 115% of the distance from...

    Cheap speaker flex

Bought some flex type speaker wire from Dion Wired a while back. Came in a sealed plastic box and was very cheap. Has worked fine in my HT setup but don't know if they have long enough runs for you.

One room for movies & music?

Not sure on the effect of reflections but now have thick wall to wall carpets in my TV room and it's way better than the previous earthcote concrete. My lounge has sprung wood floors and cloth couches etc which seem to work really well for stereo.

One room for movies & music?

Didn't want to derail the previous topic on AVR's so thought I'd start a new one. My experience has been that movies sound best in rooms with lots of damping (carpets etc.) while stereo is better with a livelier room. I've tried to run both in the same room and gave up; not sure if it was the...

    Mastering of movies vs. music

I read somewhere (may have been on this forum) that movies are usually mastered to sound best in an acoustically dead environment. This makes some sense to me as cinemas tend to have carpeted floors &  walls, cloth sets with lots of bodies in them etc. Apparently music, however, is generally...

what gets lost on mp3 conversions?

iPod classic on a dock as a source, Yamaha AS500 amp & KEF IQ9 speakers. Perhaps I have rubbish ears  :)

what gets lost on mp3 conversions?

As Kenmasters said, lossy formats throw out stuff we aren't likely to hear anyway. This probalby helps your amp & speakers as they now need to reproduce less detail i.e. it simplifies the music without removing anything you're likely to hear . My music is ripped in a mixture of 256kbs AAC and...

    Members' Kit pics

I've probably got a decent chance of getting cloth blinds installed (once the finances have recovered from the pipe cleaning they got with the alterations :-[) I'll try to get them made with the thickest fabric I can get at a reasonable price. Another idea I had was with the painting on the...

    Members' Kit pics

Thanks guys. The equipment is in a cupboard because my youngest son is 20 months old. If it was exposed the iPod would end up in the dog's water and there would be a peanut butter sandwich in the cd player. Luckily I have an easy alternative to curtains - I can open all the stacking doors and...

    Members' Kit pics

I've only recently finished alterations and so have just set up the stereo kit. Still experimenting with options and placement of speakers. I'll try straightening them and see if it improves the sound. No curtains in the room and none likely (WAF problem). I may be able to get cloth blinds in...

    Members' Kit pics

Here's my stereo setup. The speakers are KEFIQ9's Side view Amp and CD player, Yamaha AS500 & dock  (from Mervin!) and Cambridge Audio 640CD My HT setup The piano on the left has strangely improved the acoustics of the room.

    Blown capacitor in sub

The buzz is there even when the only thing plugged in is the power. I've even tried plugging it into a different plug point, no joy. That's why I reckon it's the capacitor, although I'm open to other suggestions.

    Blown capacitor in sub

I've found various sets of instructions. The simplest solution (quick & easy, the one I'm looking at) is in the .pdf file on http://lug.demon.co.uk/kefrepair/?p=140 The more comprehensive solutions are on: http://lug.demon.co.uk/kefrepair/?p=113 I might try this one but it looks a bit...

    Blown capacitor in sub

Thanks mahleu, I'll give it a bash. Would appreciate if anyone can point me towards where I can buy the capacitor.

    Blown capacitor in sub

Not sure if this should be here or in the DIY section. My KEF PSW2500 sub has started making a loud buzzing sound when the power is on. It does it regardless of whether it's connected to the amp or not. Looking on the web it seems that the KEF subs have a design flaw where they blow one of the...

My daughter's piano has improved the acoustics of my TV room

I've recently had an interesting experience. We've just finished alterations on our house and one of the outcomes is that my daughter's piano moved into our TV room. At first I wasn't thrilled about this but once we (OK, a whole bunch of us, the thing is jolly heavy) got it in I tried out my AV...

Do you believe in cable run-in?

There's probably a fairly easy way to resolve this. Someone go and buy 4 identical lengths of cable. A couple of forum members come round to their house and listen to all the lengths. They should sound the same (if not then we have an even more complicated situation). Then the owner puts two in...

    polk Rti-A9 power?

I used to have a set of RTi A7's which I was running off a 2x150w stereo amp. They were awesome with this amp, but I also tried them on a 2x80w stereo amp and they were awful. I would guess that the A9's will need serious power to really perform properly and my guess would be that no standard AV...
